Why we started Leesa
In 1994 I left the UK in search of the American Dream. In the years that followed I lived the roller-coaster life of the classic entrepreneur but I never forgot where I came from – always trying to add a little of my British humour and reality into the way I ran my companies.
Around 2004, about 10 years into my American Dream, my co-founder Jamie (who grew up in the mattress industry), helped me source memory foam mattress pads, which I sold directly to consumers using newspaper advertising (rather like the reader offers you see in the papers in the UK.) At the time, Jamie and I discussed the possibility of selling memory foam mattresses directly to consumers but at that point, the mattresses were very basic and the newspaper channel was drying up, so that business ran its course.
Over the years that followed, I had trouble sleeping. My wife and I bought beds offering all sorts of benefits, from coils to memory foam - nothing worked. What’s more, the experience of trying out mattresses in showrooms with a salesperson peering down on us was horrible. None of the features actually helped us sleep better.
At some point, my business life took a new direction and instead of starting businesses for myself, I started helping other companies bring new ideas to life. I built an amazing team of designers, developers, e-commerce experts as well as a team of operational experts needed to start new businesses – especially online. We were constantly looking for the one big idea that we could launch ourselves, and we had a few moderate successes along the way.
Then, in November 2013, I bumped into my Leesa co-founder again completely by chance, and I half jokingly said, “Do you think the world is ready for a luxury mattress shipped in a box directly to people's homes?” He laughed and said... “Funny you should say that, I’ll call you.” The next time we met, I challenged Jamie, “If you could redesign the mattress and reinvent the sleep experience, what would you do?” His response was “I’d simplify it and take out all the ‘stuff’ that has been added for years to justify higher prices.”
From this idea, Leesa was born. The Leesa mattress is a completely redesigned mattress from the inside out. In a few short months, thousands of Americans bought Leesa mattresses. Soon after we realized how successful Leesa was going to be, I asked my team to help me bring the idea “home.” Leesa UK manufactures its mattresses in Derbyshire, less than 45 minutes from where I grew up in North Cheshire and our UK offices, staffed and managed locally, are nearby in the center of Manchester.
So here we are…. Leesa UK - the same simple to use online store, the same commitment to our community (see our Leesa One-Ten Program) and of course, the same amazing mattress that changes everything you know about how to buy a mattress and delivers a “better place to sleep” night after night. Leesa mattresses are designed to take the guesswork out of buying a mattress. For example, the whole idea of soft, medium, and firm mattresses ignores the fact that there is actually a “best feel.” We call it “universal” and it helps almost everybody sleep better.

Meet the team
CEO (based in the US)
David is driven by his passion for his family, his friends, and his work. He expects a lot of himself and of others, which has been the driving force behind his success. David would say simply that he’s been lucky to work with great people doing what he loves. He has helped bring new ideas to life, from his early days as a strategy consultant to the start of his entrepreneurial journey more than twenty years ago. He travels the world in pursuit of his passion, and it’s not unusual to find him cycling through the desert in Israel with one of his daughters one week and in a business meeting in London the next. David describes Leesa as a combination of a great idea, a strong management team, a world-class product, and the best business model he has ever been involved in.
All great businesses need someone who loves the day-to-day operations. Leesa has Anthony. He has honed is organisational and operational skills working in aviation, utilities, finance, fast moving consumer goods and business consultancy, launching new products and managing large multi million pound contracts. Anthony’s passion is putting all of the pieces and systems in place that allow a business to operate at its full potential. You will find Anthony on his road bike when not spending time with his two boys.
Cosmina is the lead developer at Leesa. With an MSc from Salford University, Cosmina has a love for the Manchester tech community and she is always keen to grasp new opportunities and challenges. She has played a key role in building unique applications that range from social apps to scalable web platforms and she has experience in a multitude of programming languages. Cosmina is a creative developer, so her free time consists of lots of photography trips exploring places outdoors, checking the latest art exhibitions or ice skating early in the morning.
Craig has spent the last decade developing marketing solutions for some of the UK’s leading Health, Fitness and Retail brands. With the rare combination of a passion for technology, an analytical mindset, and a creative spark – Craig is always looking for new and innovative ways to understand customers and reach them in the moments that matter. When he isn’t planning, implementing and analysing marketing projects for Leesa UK, you can find Craig challenging himself to improve his 10k time, relaxing in the Peak District, or spending quality time with close friends and family.
A Bsc graduate in International Business with Spanish from Aston University, David has the confidence and aspirations to help take Leesa forward in the UK market through his enthusiastic approach to presenting the Leesa story. David is a big "people person" who enjoys working in the team environment of the Leesa office as much as the team environment whilst playing for his local football team on a Sunday.
